FOUNDATION and HISTORY

1994 The Research Department Section Three of the Japanese Red Cross Central Blood Centre initiated a basic study on the methods for the collection and preservation of cord blood.
1995 April Umbilical cord blood banking was begun by Section Three, in cooperation with the Japanese Red Cross Medical Centre.
1996 June Aiiku Hospital joined the project.
1997 September The 'Cord Blood Banking Project' was formally inaugurated when the Centre's Administration joined.
1998 January The Management Committee for Cord Blood Banking was formed. Section Three wrote the manual for the use of our cord blood in transplantations.
1999 September The name was changed to "The Japanese Red Cross Central Blood Centre Cord Blood Bank".
1999 December Musashino Red Cross Hospital and Tokyo Kosei Nenkin Hospital joined.
2001 April Tokyo Adventist Hospital and Sanraku Hospital joined.
2001 June Ikeshita Clinic for Women and Children joined.
2001 October The name was changed to "The Metro Tokyo Red Cross Cord Blood Bank", accompanied by the reconfiguration of the blood centres in Tokyo.
2005 October Japanese Red Cross Katsushika Maternity Hospital joined.
2006 May Ikeshita Ladies' Clinic Shinonome joined.
2006 December National Center for Global Health and Medicine joined.
2006 December Toho Ladies' Clinic joined.
2008 January Eiju Genaral Hospital joined.
2010 March Sanraku Hospital stopped cord blood collection.
2010 October The collected cord blood in the area of the Kanagawa Cord Blood Bank began to be delivered to, tested at and preserved in our blood centre.
2011 March The Kanagawa Cord Blood Bank merged with the transfer of the preserved cord blood units, machinery and records to our blood centre.
2012 April The name was changed to "The Japanese Red Cross Kanto-Koshinetsu Cord Blood Bank", accompanied by the reconfiguration of the blood centres in Japan.
2012 August Six hospitals in Miyagi Prefecture joined.
2013 March Toho Ladies' Clinic and National Centre for Global Health and Medicine stopped cord blood collection.
2013 April Mizuguchi Hospital joined.
2013 October Six hospitals in Kanagawa Prefecture joined.
